iBASE MPT-3110R - Rugged Box PC for Railway Applications

Computing Built for the Demands of Rail Transport

Railway vehicles place computing hardware under conditions that standard industrial systems are not designed to tolerate. Constant vibration, wide temperature swings, strict fire protection requirements, and the need for uninterrupted operation over extended service periods all demand purpose-built hardware – and the certification to prove it.

The iBASE MPT-3110R is a fanless box PC developed specifically for rail vehicle applications. Certified to EN 50155:2021 for railway electronic equipment and EN 45545-2 for fire protection, it provides a solid platform for safety-critical and availability-sensitive computing tasks in modern rail vehicles.

FORTEC Switzerland is pleased to offer the MPT-3110R as part of its embedded computing portfolio for railway and transportation applications.

Processor and Performance

The MPT-3110R is powered by an Intel® Atom® processor from the x7000RE series, chosen to balance sufficient processing capability for real-time railway applications with moderate power consumption – a practical consideration in mobile, vehicle-mounted systems where power budgets are controlled. Typical use cases include passenger information systems, onboard video surveillance, data aggregation from vehicle sensors, and condition monitoring of rolling stock components.

Rugged Mechanical

Design The physical design of the MPT-3110R reflects its intended operating environment. The enclosure is built for continuous operation under mechanical stress, and all external connections for networking, USB, and power supply use vibration-resistant M12 connectors – the industrial standard for connections that must maintain integrity through sustained mechanical vibration and shock.

Ignition Control for Vehicle-Integrated Operation

Integrated ignition control logic enables the system to follow the vehicle's own power-up and shutdown sequences. This allows the MPT-3110R to start up and shut down in a controlled manner in line with the operating logic of the host vehicle, rather than requiring separate management of the computing system's power state.

Connectivity and Interface Capability

For a system deployed in rail vehicles, connectivity breadth and reliability are both critical. The MPT-3110R provides:

  • Dual Gigabit Ethernet for network redundancy and high-bandwidth data transfer
  • Isolated CAN 2.0A, CAN 2.0B, and CAN FD interfaces for integration with vehicle control and sensor networks
  • Flexible configurable GPIOs for application-specific I/O requirements
  • Two SIM card slots for WWAN connectivity with automatic failover between mobile networks – ensuring continuous data transmission even when primary network connectivity is lost
  • USB Type-C port with Alternate Mode and Power Delivery up to 60 W

Maintenance-Friendly Storage Access

Railway systems are typically deployed for long service periods between scheduled maintenance windows. The MPT-3110R addresses this with a removable 2.5-inch drive bay that allows storage devices to be replaced quickly without disassembling the unit – reducing downtime during maintenance operations and simplifying storage replacement in the field.

Railway Certifications

The MPT-3110R carries two essential certifications for rail vehicle deployment:

  • EN 50155:2021 – the European standard for electronic equipment used in railway rolling stock, covering electromagnetic compatibility, power supply variation tolerance, vibration, shock, and temperature requirements
  • EN 45545-2 – the European standard for fire protection in railway vehicles, covering the fire behaviour of materials used in the construction of the system

Together, these certifications provide the compliance foundation required for integration into certified rail vehicle projects across European markets.

FORTEC Switzerland supports your railway project from initial system evaluation through to series procurement. Our team advises on processor configuration, interface requirements, mechanical integration, and compliance documentation to help you deploy the right solution for your rail vehicle application.
