Full HD Resolution and Integrated HMI Functions in a Single Display Module
Building a capable human-machine interface for automotive, marine, or industrial applications has traditionally meant combining separate components: display panel, graphics controller, touch controller, and audio system, each with its own integration effort, software overhead, and potential point of failure.
The Bridgetek EVE (Embedded Video Engine) architecture takes a different approach - integrating display driving, touch control, audio output, and graphics rendering into a single controller IC that communicates with the host microcontroller via a simple SPI or QSPI interface. This dramatically reduces the hardware complexity of HMI designs and allows advanced graphical interfaces to be developed even on modest microcontrollers with limited Flash memory.
PANASYS has launched the BT820 series of intelligent displays built around the Bridgetek BT820 - the fifth generation of the EVE family - bringing full HD resolution and large-format LVDS display support to this established and developer-friendly platform for the first time.
What the BT820 / EVE5 Generation Brings
The BT820 represents a significant step forward from the previous EVE4 generation. Where earlier EVE controllers supported a maximum resolution of WXGA (1280×800), the BT820 drives LVDS displays at resolutions up to 1920×1200 - a full HD and beyond capability that opens the platform to a substantially wider range of display sizes and application requirements.
Key capabilities of the BT820 EVE5 engine include:
- Full HD display support up to 1920×1200 at 60 fps via LVDS interface
- Framebuffer architecture using external DDR3 SDRAM with 16 kByte display list for smooth, complex UI rendering
- Integrated touch control supporting both capacitive and resistive touchscreens
- Built-in audio output for synchronized sound effects, alerts, and voice feedback
- Direct access to NOR/NAND Flash and SD card storage for images, video, animations, and fonts - without loading the host MCU's Flash memory
- SPI/QSPI host interface maintaining the same object-oriented programming model as previous EVE generations, protecting existing software investment
- Live video input via direct LVDS video stream (up to 1920×1200 at 60 fps) for integration into the HMI display
Simplified Integration for Embedded HMI Development
The EVE architecture's defining advantage is what it removes from the system design. Rather than maintaining separate controller logic for graphics, touch, and audio, the BT820 consolidates all three functions onto a single IC. The host MCU communicates over SPI, offloading all display rendering and touch processing to the EVE engine. This means the graphics pipeline does not compete with real-time control tasks running on the host processor, and even microcontrollers with limited resources can drive sophisticated, animated interfaces.
